AJWAIN

Ajwain is an herb, sometimes referred to as Bishop’s Weed (but not the only plant that uses that name). Both the leaves and the fruit/seeds are used for their medicinal benefit.

Ajwain is powerful cleanser that helps to stimulate the appetite, enhance digestion, alleviate gas and discomfort in the stomach, support the respiratory system and the kidneys, and lower blood pressure. Ajwain is rich in thymol, an essential oil that has antimicrobial and liver protective properties. It is full of antioxidants, is anti-inflammatory, and helps to reduce phlegm and mucus.

Ajwain is helpful for pacifying Vata and Kapha doshas, but it is warming, so can increase Pitta dosha. Due to its warming properties, its a great spice to add to your winter recipes! It has a strong and pungent flavor, often mistaken for caraway or thyme. Try adding it into some of your favorite dishes, such as any curry or rice dish.

For a medicinal recipe, try:

Ajwain Kadha (used for cough/cold/sore throat):

In a pot add 4 c. water, 1 tbsp ajwain seeds, 1 tbsp tulsi, 1 tsp black pepper. Boil down to 3 cups, strain and cool to warm. Add a bit of lemon and honey
